The edge we stand on / I am unable to tell you simply what this all means

Consider this piece of writing [often thought of as an exhibition description] as a starting point. This is not the space where I will tell you what all this means. I find that I can not put together a palatable synopsis, because I do not want to condense the complexities and the contradictions that are the beauty and pain of my experience being Queer. I do not want to write a 500 word essay that will be pinned under a vinyl title, just to scream at you statistics in hopes to make you care. What I want is for you to go about the room, and notice.

I want you to take time, take it in, notice, and then when you leave, I want you to continue to notice. I want you to think about these love letters, these journal entries, these politics, these bodies. I want you to find within yourself an expansiveness that also holds complexities and contradictions, to then hold energy and empathy to help us live. I want you to take the time to notice, so that there will be less pain, less death, less violent politics, less ignorance, less prejudice, less bigotry, less harm.

I want you to notice.

Here are some places to begin,

Let's start here,

Euphoria and dysphoria / love and loss / pride and shame / hope and fear.

I am too young to know death as well as I do.

I am too young to know love as deeply as I do.

Let's start here,

I have spent the majority of my life yearning,

for strength, for safety, for acceptance, for love, for death, for an end to shame, for an emergency exit, for kindness, for someone to listen, for politics to not scare me, for the church to not scare me, for you to not scare me, for the bravery to fight these oppressions, for the courage to call you out, for the voice to tell you my name, for the ability to look into a mirror and find peace, for you to meet my eyes without wavering, for a loving community, for friends, for people to be in my life and want to stay, for me to find people who make me want to stay,

I yearn for the long and happy life I have been told I wouldn't have.

Lets start here,

I find that I want to build monuments for the people who don't get monuments built for them.

My friends, my dear friends.

In many ways, this exhibition is dedicated to you.
